How You Move Now Affects How You’ll Move Later

Have you noticed how some people seem to stay effortlessly mobile as they age, while others start feeling stiff and restricted?
A big part of that comes down to how they’ve moved over the years.
Our bodies adapt to whatever we do most. So if you spend a lot of time sitting, your body gets really good at… sitting.
If you mostly move in the same ways every day, some muscles stay strong, while others don’t get much of a look-in. Over time, that can lead to feeling tight, stiff, or just a bit ‘off’ when you try to move differently.
But the good news? You don’t have to make big changes to keep your body feeling good for years to come. Small things, done consistently, make a difference.
Keep moving well with the following:
- Mix it up – If your workouts are mostly straight up and down (like squats, lunges, or running), try adding some side-to-side or twisting movements.
- Rotate and reach – Your spine and hips were built to move, but it’s easy to avoid if it feels a bit restricted. Adding gentle twisting movements can help.
- Break up long stretches of sitting – Even just standing up, shifting your weight, or stretching for a minute or two can help.
It’s not about doing everything perfectly—it’s about keeping your body used to moving in different ways so it stays strong, flexible, and ready for whatever you want to do.
I work with people to build strength and flexibility in all angles, so you can move well now—and keep moving well later. If you’re keen to add more variety to your movement but aren’t sure where to start, get in touch.
