Navigating End-of-Year Fatigue at Work

It’s here again. The calendar’s packed, deadlines are looming, and you’re probably feeling it: tired, irritable, a bit scattered, and maybe overwhelmed. Sound familiar?

This wave of end-of-year fatigue is common, but it’s not something we should accept as ‘normal.’ Prolonged stress, the relentless pace of work commitments and the usual holiday rush can really have an impact this time of year.

If you find yourself facing the same exhaustion every December, it might be worth asking: is the way you’re working sustainable year-round? After all, if you’re ‘hanging out’ for the holidays just to recover, maybe it’s time to rethink some habits.

I’ve talked about this before and you can find some lifestyle considerations here to get you through the next few weeks but this time I’ve also got some workplace-friendly strategies to help you regain focus, energy, and motivation through the end of the year—and set yourself up for a smoother start to the next one:

Create Micro-Breaks in Your Day

It’s tempting to power through, but taking short breaks can actually boost productivity. Step away from your desk, do a few stretches, or take a quick walk. Even a 5-minute reset can make a big difference in how you tackle the rest of your day.

Set Priorities (and Stick to Them)

The endless to-do list can feel overwhelming, so focus on what truly matters. Identify your top three priorities for each day and tackle those first. Communicate realistic timelines with your team to avoid last-minute rushes.

Hydrate and Snack Wisely

Coffee and sugary treats are often the go-to during busy periods, but they can leave you crashing later. Keep a water bottle at your desk and have healthy snacks like nuts, fruit, or yogurt on hand to maintain steady energy throughout the day.

Use Movement as a Reset

Sitting all day can drain your energy. Schedule short bursts of movement—walk while taking a call, do some chair stretches, or stand while working. These small actions not only improve focus but can also lift your mood.

Learn to Say No (Gently)

At this time of year, everyone’s asking for ‘just one more thing.’ Practice setting boundaries by politely declining or delegating tasks that don’t fit your priorities. Protecting your bandwidth benefits both you and your team.

Reflect on the Year

Set aside a few minutes to acknowledge your wins—big or small. This can help shift your mindset from ‘overwhelmed’ to accomplished, which makes finishing the year strong feel more doable.

The end of the year doesn’t have to be a sprint to the finish line. With a few mindful adjustments, you can ease the exhaustion and step into the holidays feeling more balanced and ready to recharge.
